Thousands of ABVP activists staged demonstrations across the country condemning attacks on Indian students in Australia recently. There are reports of organising massive demonstrations from Bengaluru, Delhi, Ahmedabad and many other parts of the country.

The ABVP demanded adequate protection to the Indian students studying in Australia by the government of that country. The students organised ghantanad at Halol in Gujarat in order to awaken the sleeping Government of India. They alleged that the UPA government failed to take any effective step forcing the Government of Australia to take a strict action against the culprits.
Staging a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on June 1, the ABVP workers strongly condemned the repeated attacks on Indian students studying in Australia. They said such attacks raised serious doubts about the security of the thousands Indian students studying abroad.

“In this globalised world, when the multicultural policies are obligatory and the world is heading towards a knowledge society, such attacks seems to be very inhuman and unprogressive. ABVP demands from the Government of India to take all necessary steps as soon as possible to restore peace, security and confidence among the Indian students who are studying abroad particularly in Australia. We also demand the central government to stop all its bilateral relation with Australia and mobilise the international community against Australia for these dastardly acts of racial discrimination. At this anguished juncture, ABVP extends its solidarity to Indian students and their families who are suffering from the racial abuse and discrimination in Australia,” said Shri Ashutosh Srivastava, state secretary of ABVP in a statement.

There are similar reports of organising protests by ABVP at Shimoga university, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and other parts of the country on June 1.
Meanwhile, BJP youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) organised a peaceful protest march outside the Australian High Commission in New Delhi on June 1. Nearly 1000 youth led by BJYM national president Amit Thakkar, Delhi president Anuj Sharma and BJP overseas cell joint convener Vijay Jolly demonstrated outside the Australian High Commission against assaults on Indian students.

Later, a six-member delegation of the BJYM leaders met the Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy who assured them of his government’s support for the security and safety of Indian students in Australia. He further stated that his government deplored attacks on Indian students. Increased policing would be provided at troubled spots around Australian universities and suburbs in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, he said. The Australian High Commissioner also said the Indian students should be fearless in approaching the Australian police in time of distress. He informed that a suitable legislation shall be enacted in Australian Parliament for the safety and security of international students.

Shri Thakkar and Shri Jolly expressed deep anguish and dismay over the repeated attacks. Shri Jolly pointed out that these incidents were bound to affect Indo-Australian business relations adversely. Every year Australia earns revenue worth Rs 4,800 crore from educational services to nearly 80,000 Indian students. A total of Rs 10 to 12 lakh per annum is spent on tuition fee, boarding, lodging and food expenses by each Indian student.

The Hindu Council of Australia also condemned the recent attacks on students of Indian origin. In a statement issued on June 2, the Council called upon the government and the police to punish the culprits and ensure that such misdeeds are not repeated. The statement said that such attacks and robberies were predominantly directed towards Indian students during the last five years.

“We note with regret that more and more Indian students are becoming the target of robberies. The problem is not limited to Melbourne only but is prevalent in all major cities. We call upon state government of Victoria to release students who have been arrested just because they were protesting. We also call upon Indian students to keep their dignity and protest using peaceful and non-violent means only. We call upon all Indian students who have been victimised to report every case to the police. We call upon the police to take their complaints seriously and act on them. We call upon the police ministers and police commissioners of states to form special task forces, similar to those formed for controlling bike gangs, to eradicate criminal elements with racist tendencies,” the statement added.

The statement pointed out that Australia is not a racist country. Hindus have been living here for many decades and enjoy full religious freedom. Most Australian are very friendly people. Indians living in Australia enjoy full freedom. Like most societies, Australia has a very small minority of people with racist attitudes. It is unfortunate to see a nexus of criminals with racist attitude targetting Indian students.

“Travelling late at night in trains has become unsafe. We call upon the state governments to make railways safe at night. It is time to have more protection officers out at night time rather than bunching them together during day and off-peak hours. We call upon all educational institutes in Australia that have overseas students, to establish an induction programme for new students and to provide support and counselling services to affected students. Such induction programme should include representatives from immigrants and police and should assure newly arrived students that reporting of a robbery will be seen as a sign of being a good citizen and is no reason for their deportation. We also ask educational institutes to invest in providing hostel accommodation to overseas students so that they do not have to travel late at night and become targets of lawless elements,” the statement added.
The Council further called upon the police forces of all the states in Australia to embrace pro-active multi-culturalism and make a special recruitment drive among people of Indian ethnicity, as this will help new arrivals in developing trust and make them more forthcoming in reporting atrocities being committed on them. Hindu Council is willing to work with state police force recruitment agencies with this aim.

“Attacks on Indian students when they are returning late night at home highlights how unsafe Australian cities have become. We want our Prime Minister and government to address these issues and not just focus on the potential loss of revenue and adverse relationships with India. Australian government should embark on an advertising campaign to make people aware of the importance of the revenue being generated from the education sector and encourage them to welcome overseas students.
“We also call upon all Australians to demonstrate their support for keeping our cities safe by writing to their politicians asking for an end to targeted and otherwise criminal activities,” the statement said. (FOC)

Protest in Delhi over Aus racism

Angry Indians took to the streets of New Delhi on Monday (June 1) to protest against recent attacks on Indian students in Australia.

The protests were organised by the youth wing of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and supporters of the regional Shiva Sena party.

Leaders of the youth wing of BJP known as BJP Yuva Morcha, met with the Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy and conveyed their concern at the spate of attacks on students and others from India.

Following the meeting, the protesters staged a demonstration, calling on the Australian government to take appropriate steps to stop such incidents.

"The Australian government should make favourable laws to ensure the safety of Indian students. The safety of these students should be guaranteed by the Australian government," said Vijay Jolly, a leader of BJP.

Other protesters, activists of Shiva Sena party, burnt down an effigy of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy assured once again that necessary steps have been taken to ensure the safety of Indian students.

"I think our Prime Minister has been very clear a couple of hours ago that Australia is not going to tolerate this sort of action. Our Deputy Prime Minister, the Chief Minister of the state of Victoria, in which Melbourne is situated, all have made it abundantly clear that we don't tolerate this sort of attacks that have taken place and that every effort will be made to prevent them in the future," McCarthy told reporters.

Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had spoken to his Australian counterpart earlier on the issue, India's Foreign minister SM Krishna, said.

"Our Prime minister has spoken to the Australian prime minister. I have spoken to the foreign affairs minister and our mission is in touch with the students from India, also with the government of Australia. I hope that things will be sorted out," Krishna said at the parliament.

"We are confident that the Australian government would take the necessary steps and we are waiting to see them," added Shashi Tharoor, former United Nations Under- Secretary General and minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

A series of attacks on Indian community in Melbourne took place in recent weeks.

On May 24 four Indian students were targetted with a screwdriver by a gang which gate crashed a party last week.

A day after, Indian student Baljinder Singh was stabbed in the abdomen as he walked from a train in what appeared to be a robbery.

Another 21-year old Indian student, Sourabh Sharma, was attacked and robbed on a Melbourne suburban train on May 9th.

There were other attacks in early May, including two on Indian taxi drivers.

Victorian Police and the High Commission of India are in dispute as to whether the attacks are racially motivated, with Victorian Police believing the students were just seen as a 'soft targets'.

The police officials contended that the students were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time as they travelled home late at night with valuables in their possession.

Australian colleges and universities are popular with Indian students pursuing degrees in business, information technology, engineering and hospitality.

More than 80,000 of them have enrolled in Australian institutions since August last year.

नई दिल्ली, (एसएनबी)। ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीय छात्रों पर हो रहे हमले के विरोध में सोमवार को भाजपा युवा मोर्चा ने रैली निकाली। रैली का नेतृत्व मोर्चा के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित ठक्कर के नेतृत्व में निकाली गई। रैली प्रदेश भाजपा कार्यालय पंडित पंत मार्ग से शुरू होकर चाणक्यपुरी स्थित आस्ट्रेलिया दूतावास तक पहुंची। ऑस्ट्रेलिया दूतावास पंहुचकर अमित ठक्कर व दिल्ली प्रदेश युवा मोर्चा के अध्यक्ष अनुज शर्मा के नेतृत्व युवकों ने जमकर प्रदर्शन किया। बाद में, एक पांच सदस्यीय प्रतिनिधिमंडल ऑस्ट्रेलिया के राजदूत जान मैक केरथी से मिला। प्रतिनिधिमंडल के सदस्यों ने केरथी ने कहा कि आस्ट्रेलिया में पढ़़ने वाले करीब 80 हजार भारतीय छात्रों से वहां की सरकार को 4800 करोड़ रूपए का राजस्व प्राप्त होता है, ऐसे में उनके साथ अत्याचार नाइंसाफी है। इस पर केरथी ने छात्रों को सुरक्षा प्रदान करने का आश्वासन दिया।

प्रदर्शन के दौरान भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चा के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित ठक्कर, दिल्ली प्रदेश युवा मोर्चा अध्यक्ष अनुज शर्मा,प्रदेश भाजपा महामंत्री आरपी सिंह, प्रदेश मंत्री द्वय सतीश उपाध्याय, आशीष सूद,विजय जौली, श्रीमती रेखा गुप्ता, गजेंदर यादव, वंदना भगत, सुरेश मीना, अरूण शर्मा, योगेश छाबड़ा अजय बंसल सहित बड़ी संख्या में युवा मोर्चा नेता उपस्थित थे। उधर, शिवसेना, डीयू छात्र संघ और ऑल इंडिया स्टूडेंट एसोसिएशन के बैनर तले छात्रों ने ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीय छात्रों की सुरक्षा पर चिंता जताते हुए जंतर-मंतर पर विरोध प्रदर्शन किए।

शिवसेना उत्तर भारत के प्रमुख संदीप कुलकर्णी ने कहा कि ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीयों के साथ किया जा रहा नस्लभेद निंदनीय है। इसके लिए जितनी दोषी आस्ट्रेलिया सरकार है उतनी ही देश की केंद्र सरकार भी जिम्मेदार है। उन्होंने कहा कि पहले तो भारतीयों के साथ पाकिस्तान जैसे देशों में ही दुर्व्यवहार होता था। अब आस्ट्रेलिया जैसे विकसित कहे जाने वाले देशों में भी भारतीयों के खिलाफ हिंसा भड़क रही है। प्रदर्शनकारियों ने आस्ट्रेलिया के प्रधानमंत्री केबिन माइकल रूड का पुतला भी फूंका।
इसके अतिरिक्त दिल्ली विश्वविघालय छात्र संघ (डूसू) और अखिल भारतीय विघार्थी परिषद (एबीवीपी) के तत्वावधान में जंतर-मंतर पर ही भारतीय छात्रों के साथ नस्लभेद हिंसा के विरूद्ध प्रदर्शन किया। डूसू की अध्यक्ष नुपुर शर्मा ने कहा कि भारतीयों को निशाना बनाया जाना चिंता का विषय है। सरकार को इसके खिलाफ सख्त कदम उठाने चाहिए और वहां भारतीयों की सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करनी चाहिए।

आस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीय छात्रों पर हमले के खिलाफ प्रदर्शन

नई दिल्ली, जागरण संवाददाता : ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीय छात्रों के साथ हो रहे नस्लीय भेदभाव व जानलेवा हमले के विरोध में दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के सैकड़ों छात्र-छात्राओं ने सोमवार को जंतर-मंतर पर प्रदर्शन किया। प्रदर्शन की अगुवाई अखिल भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद के राष्ट्रीय कार्यकारी सदस्य और डूसू की अध्यक्षा नुपूर शर्मा ने किया।
उधर ऑस्ट्रेलिया में भारतीय छात्रों पर नस्लीय भेदभाव और जानलेवा हमलों के खिलाफ भारतीय जनता युवा मोर्चा की युवा शाखा ने सोमवार को ऑस्ट्रेलियन उच्चायुक्त चाणक्यपुरी के बाहर शांतिपूर्वक विरोध मार्च किया। प्रदर्शन गत दिनों ऑस्ट्रेलिया में नस्लीय भेद का शिकार हुए भारतीय छात्र बलविन्दर कुमार, श्रवण कुमार व अन्य के मद्देनजर था। नुपूर शर्मा ने बताया कि भारतीय छात्रों पर जितने भी हमले हुए हैं, इनमें से अधिक पर घात लगाकर रात में हमला किया गया है। बलविन्दर को चाकू से जबकि श्रवण को स्क्रूड्राइवर से गोदा गया है। ये घटनाएं वहां के लोगों की अमानवीयता को दर्शाती हैं। विकास दहिया ने कहा कि भारतीय छात्र ऑस्ट्रेलियन अर्थव्यस्था को अहम योगदान देते हैं। ये हर साल 7500 करोड़ से भी अधिक का योगदान देते हैं। भारतीय छात्र अपने शांत छवि और बेहतर प्रदर्शन के लिए जाने जाते हैं। ऐसे में इन पर हमला निदंनीय है। उन्होंने बताया कि इसके लिए हम सभी ऑस्ट्रेलियन हाई कमीशन के साथ भारत सरकार को इस दिशा में जरूरी कदम उठाने के लिए एक ज्ञापन देंगे। छात्र कलपेश ने बताया कि विदेश के अच्छे विश्वविद्यालयों में हम अपने काबिलियत पर दाखिला पाते हैं। इसके बाद हम वहां की पूरी फीस भरते हैं, हमें कोई छात्रवृति नहीं दी जाती। इसके बाद भी हम पर हमला बर्दाश्त के लायक नहीं है। ये घटनाएं वहां के छात्रों की ईष्र्या का परिचायक है। भारत सरकार और ऑस्ट्रेलियन हाई कमीशन को इनके खिलाफ जल्द कठोर कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए।
उधर ऑस्ट्रेलिया उच्चायुक्त चाणक्यपुरी के बाहर शांतिपूर्वक विरोध मार्च किया। प्रदर्शनकारियों की अगुवाई युवा मोर्चा के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित ठक्कर, प्रदेश अध्यक्ष अनुज शर्मा ने किया। इस प्रर्दशन के बाद युवा मोर्चा का एक प्रतिनिधि मंडल भारत में ऑस्ट्रेलिया के उच्चायुक्त जॉन कैरथी से मिलकर करीब घंटे भर की मीटिंग की। जिसमें भारतीय छात्रों पर हो रहे हमले का ज्ञापन देते हुए उनसे मांग की कि इसके लिए जरूरी कदम उठाए जाएं।
इस मौके पर अनुज ने बताया कि इन हमलों से ऑस्ट्रेलियन अर्थव्यस्था को 4500 करोड़ से अधिक का नुकसान हो सकता है। इस पर उच्चायुक्त कैथरी ने भारतीय छात्रों को सभी आवश्यक सुरक्षा देने का आश्वासन दिया। इस मौके पर प्रदेश भाजपा मंत्री सतीश उपाध्याय, निगम पार्षद रेखा गुप्ता समेत 500 से अधिक कार्यकर्ता मौजूद थे।

Protest outside Australian High Commission against racist attacks
New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) Dozens of people Monday protested outside the Australian High Commission here against the recent alleged racist attacks on Indian students studying in Australia.
"We have all come here in support of our children. The Indian government is sleeping and that is why we are here. We just want the security beefed up. My son has faced no such threat but the fear has settled in," Ramesh Kalra, one of the protestors, told IANS.
The protest was led by the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
Four Indian students have been injured in violent attacks in the last three weeks in Australia.
The protestors raised slogans and demanded strong action from the Australian authorities.
Later a six-member delegation, comprising parents of students studying in Australia and BJYM members, met the High Commissioner John McCarthy on the issue and demanded quick relief measures.
After meeting McCarthy, BJYM president Amit Thakkar said: "He condemned the attacks on the Indian students. He is aware of the cordial relations between the two countries and would like to maintain them. He offered to forward his recommendations and the BJYM memorandum to the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd."
Thakkar said they had suggested that a press conference be held to inform people of what the two governments are doing on the issue. He said they had also demanded more policing in the areas where the Indian community lives in Australia.
Delhi BJP leader Vijay Jolly, whose son is also studying in Australia, took part in the protest and said he was extremely worried.
"My son is also studying in Australia and as a parent, I am extremely worried. The students are afraid to step out at night. We parents are spending harrowing nights," Jolly said.

Australian PM promises action over attacks

Sydney/New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd Monday vowed to punish attackers of Indian students as the police freed 18 students detained following massive anti-racism protests.

Rudd told parliament in Canberra that he had spoken to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said Australians strongly deplored the string of attacks on Indians studying in the country.

He said the state authorities had been told to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In India, where the issue has caused outrage, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna expressed the hope that the problems of Indian students would get "sorted out".

There have been four attacks on Indian students in quick succession in Melbourne and Sydney, the two largest cities of Australia. The first took place May 9 and the most recent one a week ago.

Three of the attacks on Indian students took place in Melbourne. Sravan Kumar Theerthala, 25, was hit with a screwdriver, Baljinder Singh was robbed and stabbed, and Sourabh Sharma, 21, suffered a fractured cheek bone and a broken tooth.

In Sydney, hospitality graduate Rajesh Kumar received 30 percent burns after a petrol bomb was hurled through the window of his Harris Park home.

"I speak on behalf of all Australians when I say that we deplore and condemn these attacks," Rudd said.

"I said to (Manmohan) Singh that the more than 90,000 Indian students in Australia are welcome guests in our country ... and the more than 200,000 Australians of Indian descent are welcome members of the Australian family."

Thousands of slogan-shouting Indian students marched through Melbourne Sunday to denounce the attacks and accused the police of failing to deal with what they said were racist assaults.

According to officials, Indian students represent about 18 percent of foreign students and are worth 2 billion Australian dollars ($1.6 billion) to the economy.

Rudd said that Australia was a country of great diversity and tolerance. "That is why these recent acts of violence are all the more deplorable."

The police meanwhile released 18 Indian students who had been detained after failing to vacate the streets during the Melbourne protests. Student leaders accused the police of brutality.

Opposition Liberal Party leader Malcolm Turnbull also condemned the muggings and beatings.

"These students are guests in our country and this recent violent behaviour has the potential to do great damage to the reputation of Australia as a destination of choice," he said.

"We could not imagine modern Australia today without the contribution of the Indian communities present among us."

Emerging out of the Indian parliament, External Affairs Minister Krishna confirmed that Rudd and Manmohan Singh had spoken to one another and he himself had a talk with Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith.

"Our mission (in Australia) is in touch with the students from India and also the government of Australia. So I hope that things will be sorted out," Krishna told reporters.

Meanwhile, an Indian expatriate group in Australia has suggested that Australian universities should arrange houses for Indian students in "safe areas".

Yadu Singh, coordinator of the newly formed Community Committee on Indian Students' Issues, also asked the students to have health and emergency insurance.

Indian students in Australia should have their own ombudsman to whom they can go in times of trouble, said the coordinator of the committee that has been formed in consultation with the Indian consulate in Sydney.

Yadu Singh said Indian students in Australia were not reporting many of the incidents. "Police must increase its visibility and start undercover patrolling. Proactive measures need to be taken rather than the reactive ones."

But he held that "Australia is not a racist country" and that most attacks were "opportunistic attacks".

Indian students at Oxford University in Britain condemned the racist attacks in Australia, saying they are baffled by the failure of Australian authorities to take stern measures.

"Indian students at the University of Oxford strongly deplore the violent attacks on students in Australia. We are very shocked to learn that such acts of violence against the Asian students have been frequent in the recent past," said Aadya Shukla, president of the Oxford University Indian Society.

Hindu extremists burn Kevin Rudd effigies

HINDU extremists burned effigies of Kevin Rudd and shouted angry slogans outside the Australian High Commission in New Delhi yesterday as fury over a series of attacks on Indian students in Melbourne reached dangerous new heights.

Amid growing concern in Canberra that the issue was damaging relations between the two countries, the Prime Minister sought to reassure India that Australia was not a racist nation.

However, a new flashpoint emerged, with accusations by Indian students in Melbourne that Victorian police used excessive force to break up a rally calling for action over racial violence. In New Delhi, about 100 members of the Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing yesterday staged protests outside Australia's high commission before meeting briefly with Canberra's top envoy to India, John McCarthy.

Members of the BJP's hardline Hindu political ally, the Shiv Sena, also burned an effigy of Mr Rudd and reportedly staged protests outside a visa office in Mumbai.

Across the country Indian cable television networks continued to whip up frenzy over the attacks, showing footage of Victorian police dragging away Indian protesters who blockaded Melbourne streets until early yesterday.

Images from the Melbourne protest, which led to 18 arrests, were overlaid on Indian TV with extracts from Mr Rudd's statement to parliament on the issue yesterday, and photographs of student victims.

Mr Rudd warned parliament yesterday the student attacks could "impair" relations between India and Australia, but tried to reassure Indians that Australia was not a racist nation and was committed to the safety of all visitors.

The issue has sparked a diplomatic storm, prompting Mr Rudd to raise the issue with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last Friday night during a phone call to congratulate him on his re-election.

Mr Rudd told Mr Singh that the 97,000 Indian students in Australia were "welcome guests" and the 200,000 Australians of Indian descent were "welcome members of the Australian family".

The Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and Trade Minister Simon Crean have held similar discussions with their Indian counterparts. "I speak on behalf of all Australians when I say that we deplore and condemn these attacks," Mr Rudd said.

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull said attacks on Indian students were an "absolute disgrace" and "un-Australian".

Indian cable networks have been running almost blanket coverage of the attacks under sensational headlines such as "Racism Beyond Shame" and "Racist Australia".

Indian newspapers have also been leading their front pages with news of the assaults, together with allegations that Melbourne police used unnecessary force on weekend protesters.

Victorian police said the use of force was appropriate, and blamed a group of "rabble-rousers" for hijacking the demonstration.

Demonstrators in India said Australians in the country need not fear violent retaliation. But BJP youth wing president Amit Thaker warned that his group would hold more protests and take further action if "the wrong acts are not stopped".

Indian blogs have taken an increasingly hysterical tone in recent days, with one even suggesting "Australians in India should be dragged on to the streets, stripped and beaten so badly they forget their names. That's the only way to teach these thugs and criminals."

Worryingly for Australia, the issue has the potential to cut Indian student enrolments by as much as 20 per cent, said Andrew Holloway, vice-president of Victoria University with responsibility for international students.

A Sydney-based Indian education recruiting agent, Rupesh Singh, said his admissions office in Gujarat had reported a 30-40 per cent drop in applications over the past fortnight.

The number of Indian students in Australia has boomed over the past five years, from 30,000 to 97,000.
